I purposely tried to overwhelm people and to show just how much the landscape is changing, but the truth is that this was just one part of the big picture. At MozCon last month, I gave a talk titled "Beyond 10 Blue Links" that included 85 screenshots of Google SERP features that went beyond the traditional organic listing:

Pioneering work in Italy has been done by Antonio Pioletti, who since the 1990s has coordinated international colloquia as well as the publication of the series “Medioevo Romanzo e Orientale” (Rubbettino), and the “Quaderni di Medioevo Romanzo e orientale.” In recent years, Pioletti has been advocating for the “formulation of an Euro-Mediterranean literary canon” Pioletti ( 2018). The image of the Mediterranean that seeps through the poem and through the history of its circulation is vivid yet hardly idyllic. And here is where Horden and Purcell’s definition of the Mediterranean as the “corrupting sea” seems to meet the poem, in its depiction of this world through the harsh lenses of blame, ridicule, and damnation. Maybe the Mediterranean is not-or at least is not only-where we expect it to be in the poem. It moves away from what could be called an “impressionistic” or “romantic” reference to the Mediterranean. And yet, in what sense would Dante’s Comedy be “Mediterranean”? By virtue of the bounty of references to this sea, its geography and people, its history, cities, myths, literatures, and religions, through the one hundred cantos? What does Mediterranean mean in this context? Is it linked to the Greek-Arabic sources that inform his image of the world? The definition that is explored in this book engages with debates sparked by Peregrine Horden and Nicholas Purcell in The Corrupting Sea: A Study of Mediterranean History (2000). In recent decades, the concept of Mediterranean has been cited with frequency in relation to the study of medieval literatures. In book 2, she has improved to the point where she might actually be better than him, slimmering and karakking at the same time, and was able to hold it for an undetermined amount of time. In The Elders, Isla is able to karak her own voice to scare Simmi and Tao, as well as some bird calls, and in The Mage, she imitates a bison well enough to distract a group of wolves.Īfter Siffrin helps her and teaches her the chant, she can also slimmer, though not as easily as her brother Pirie. At the start of The Taken, all she could do was toss a bird call, but by the end of it, she could mimic all the animals in the zoo with ease, scaring off The Taken. Isla is intuitively skilled in karakking, the art of throwing your voice and imitating other sounds. However, she doesn't seem to like being talked down to, or bossed around, as she argued with Siffrin a lot over that. She finds it very easy to forgive others - first forgiving Siffrin for standing back and watching her skulk die, then Haiki for betraying her, and finally Pirie, for accidentally leading Karka to their den. She is also very kindhearted and brave, risking her life to save Farraclaw, and later Haiki.Īs is also seen in the second book, Isla has a sense of humor, as, when she hears Simmi and Tao talk about her behind her back, she grows annoyed, however, she quickly forgives them, but decides to mess with them, by Slimmering and Karakking, and then later showing them how to do it themselves. Isla is also incredibly curious in the first book, she never stops asking questions, even when Siffrin makes fun of her for it, and in the second, she asks the elders and Siffrin to show her wa'akkir. This shows that Isla has a big heart and is willing to find and try another alternative to fighting. And later, when they are fighting the Taken, she is shown trying to reason with them. In book two, she is a lot more cautious, wondering if Haiki drowning was a trick, and deciding not to trust foxes. She is the most strongest, and confident fox in the whole map. Isla is also incredibly loyal, refusing to believe that her brother is dead and has an amazing amount of self preservation. Isla is shown to be quite naive at first trusting the furless and Siffrin easily and seems to have a problem following orders, disobeying her parents to go get berries when it starts to rain and they order her inside the den. She is small, or at least compared to other characters.Īfter the events of The Mage Isla's fur turns raven with a white tail-tip when she becomes the new Black Fox. She appears to have amber eyes, and also describes her paws as being black. Isla has a short snout and a slim fluffy tail. She is pretty, with soft, fuzzy ginger fur. Isla's appearance is first described when Siffrin was her double to slow her down. Occasionally, when troops take a lot of damage, they'll run away for a bit before recovering their wits. Also rather than competitors Cossacks or Total War's morale system, something very basic is in place here. That is, the uncontrollable mob of funny little men that's impossible to untangle. When they're actually engaged, things rapidly fall into the standard problem of many RTS games. Much like fellow Napoleonic game Cossacks 2, it's at its worse when the battle is split across two areas, where the AI's omnipresence really gains an inhuman advantage. Watching the manoeuvres of your own forces is a terribly lumpen thing in comparison with the graceful dancing of the opposition. What makes this worse is that while you have to order all your units individually, the computer, like some impossibly perfectionist conductor, can choreograph all theirs simultaneously. This really is somewhat bizarre, with most campaign games featuring a few minutes of trudging to reach the oppositions line, followed by a frenetic sixty or so seconds of clicking. You see, the game appears to feature none of the staples of large-scale battle games, with you unable to either speed up time when nothing is happening or pause to issue orders when things get too hectic. More critically, on the actual tactical real-time maps, there's a similar lop-sided nature. The simple delay, as it moves through the game's many NPC factions, slows the pace of the game to a crawl. On the strategy map, due to tight economic restrictions, there's relatively little you can do in a single turn, except fiddle and press "next turn". However, in terms of play, it's a disjointed and ill-paced game. Altering its tactics depending upon your army's consistent elements is one of its stronger points. While not entirely flawless, major errors of judgement are rare enough to be forgivable. In terms of your opponent, he's a decent enough fellow for a computer simulation of a gentleman. If there wasn't a reason why you had to advance on a unit taking cover in a house (using buildings as firing positions is one of Imperial Glory's better tactical-level features), you'd never do it. In practice, most games end by annihilation, with the objectives more about avoiding stalemate than something you actually achieve. For example, there could be three objectives, with holding two for a period enough to secure victory. As well as the expected "Kill Everyone", there are other mission types. When you fight a battle, you discover that each area has a different map and specific objective. Why can't you construct merchant ships on the standard construction menu? I don't know. On the more practical side, some of the game's options are a little confusedly expressed in-engine. While they gain experience, it's at a rate where you don't particularly mind if one dies. For example, generals are little more than a flag to attach your units to allow them to move around the map. That aside, it does lack some of Total War's character. For example, attack without formally declaring war and you'll justifiably be considered something of a bounder by the rest of Europe. The last is interesting, in that your actions shape other countries long-term opinion of you. There are many other options, including marrying heirs, financial deals and simply trying to improve your reputation with their people. They last for a set amount of time, and if one party is attacked then all parties must change their status to hostile. Unlike than the rather meaningless deals you may see in many other games, mutual defence treaties actually count for something here. In terms of strong points, on the strategy map the most memorable is Diplomacy. When a battle actually takes place, you're given the option of fighting the battle in exciting 3D-RTS-o-Vision. Mostly it's a Risk-style strategy map of Europe where you manage your affairs, construct armies, conquer provinces and perform research. This places you in charge of one of five period empires. This means that while there are historical battles, multiplayer and skirmishes, the core of the game is an elaborate campaign mode. The high concept is simple: It's Creative Assembly's Total War series, but applied to the Napoleonic era. But at least it doesn't mix its metaphors. Such is the case with Imperial Glory, which does a lot of things right and a handful of things wrong and ends up being disqualified from our affections by a few own goals. It doesn't take much to pass from courting disaster to marrying her. |
